FAQ
FAQ
What type of characters are appable?
Right now, Penance accepts the following types of characters: canon characters, canon AUs, CRAUs, and original characters.
Are non-humanoid characters accepted?
As long as you can make a valid case for them having a soul, then yes! Depending on the type of character, they may be required to be apped in with a human body to accept the more physical punishments. Optimus Prime would be an example of a character that would need a physical body. It's a good thing that hell is willing to supply it!
Are duplicates allowed?
Within reason, yes. At the moment, three versions of any given character are allowed in the game. This means you could app in Tony Stark from the MCU, from the comics, and still have room for one more alternative version.
Are alternate versions of the devil appable?
Sure, but he or she won't have any dominion over this version of hell and will be treated like any other sinner.
Are there any age limits for characters?
Minimum age requirement is 16+ at this time. Aging up a character may be acceptable within reason. If the character is already close in age, aging up is acceptable. If the character is very young and no canon appearances of them older exist, then we feel that's stretching a bit too far into OC territory.
Can characters be apped post-death?
Yes. They'll be told they're being given a chance to either go to heaven or come back to life. This will be left up to player's preference.
What's the policy on new canons?
We'll require a one month waiting period for new canons to be considered appable.
How many characters can a player app?
At present, players may app two characters per app cycle for a total of four.
How are sins handled?
Some universal sins are always required to be listed, including murder (not in self-defense), rape, stealing, lying, etc. Other sins may be included based on what a character may feel guilty for or at least knows is customarily seen as wrong. For instance, Dexter Morgan may not feel guilty over the murders he commits but he knows that most people feel it's wrong. A character like Matt Murdock may get hung up on Catholic guilt and include any variety of sins on his list.
This includes things like homosexuality. If a character would feel or think it's wrong to be attracted to a person of the same sex, then it's fine it include it on this list.
We would like to take a moment to remind everyone that this doesn't and shouldn't reflect how anyone feels oocly, but merely what is IC for a character of this type. Please remember to keep an IC and OOC divide and do what you feel comfortable with!
My character doesn't have any sins. Can I app them for the corruption aspect?
Unfortunately, not at this time! Characters are required to have a few sins to their name in order to be drawn into hell. However, these don't have to be major sins necessarily.
My character is pregnant, what happens?
They will magically not be pregnant. As a matter of fact, pregnancy isn't at all possible in Hell. Child souls are without sin by default, and honestly, hell is no place to raise children.
How many items are characters allowed to bring in?
Not counting the clothes on their backs, up to six personal items. As long as it isn't game breaking and fits in a duffel back (which will be supplied to your character in their initial room), then it should be fine! Note that a box of ammo counts as one full item. Please keep in mind that no pets are allowed. Canon pets may be earned back through events or deals with the devil, however.
What happens if I want to app a character I previously dropped?
They can keep their previous memories the place and assume they sinned enough again to be brought back or are still being punished for some further sins and told they were released on error. Just note somewhere in your app if you're keeping previous game memories/what changes you'll keep, if any.
What is this game about?
Please read the premise here for a full explanation. Simply put, Penance is a game based in hell that deals with giving the characters a choice between redemption or further corruption.
Are characters told why they're there?
Yes, mostly. They're told they've arrived to work off their sins and seek redemption. The fact that there's plenty of temptation toward the darker side of things is a bit glossed over, however. The higher ups don't really want to give the game away entirely.
Will my character be able to leave?
No. Not unless they pay off their debt.
What can my character expect?
Pain and torment to make up for their sins and test their resolve to be a better person. There will be physical and psychological torture to be carried out each month that will vary in intensity. Occasionally, you may be required to punish one of your fellow sinners, and the higher ups won't really care if it's your significant other, best friend, or most hated enemy. Of course, there can be pleasure and fun to be found as well, if you're open to it.
What are their accommodations like?
More details can be found in the housing page, but each character will have a bed that may not be entirely comfortable to sleep on. Not impossible to get rest on, but it will be lumpy and old. They will have a place to put their clothes and belongings, and acesss to a single bathroom unless they're in one of the suites. They may want to work out some sort of schedule so everybody gets a chance.
Will characters have any contact with the devil?
Occasionally he'll make announcements on the network and he has a private inbox, if you really need to have a word with him. Just please remember that Lucifer is a very busy fallen angel and may not always have the time... particularly if you're not offering anything interesting.
Does my character have to live at the hotel?
Yes, it's strongly recommended. Taking your chances outside the confines of the hotel will expose your character to demons and hell beasts alike and who knows what sort of tortures or death.
My character is a vampire or has other special dietary needs. How will this be handled in game?
There will be a supply of dubiously attained blood in the kitchen fridge for vampire characters, but they will be allowed to feed on other characters. While IC permission doesn't need to be attained, please discuss this oocly with your partner! Likewise, any other special dietary needs will be met if they're absolutely necessary.
My character is disabled. Will any accommodations be made?
Yes, they'll be accommodated as well as hell can manage.
My character has mind control abilities. Will it still count if they force someone to punish themselves or others?
No, and it'll get added to the controller's list of sins. Taking away someone's free will is very frowned upon.
My character can summon objects out of thin air or other means. Will they keep that ability here?
It will be severely limited. No infinite items at a time and nothing that they wouldn't otherwise be able to acquire in hell.
Will my characters be allowed to keep their powers?
For the most part, yes. Anything that would break game mechanics or fundamentally change the setting will be nullified.
Will my character be allowed to explore?
This is really up to how characters interact with the setting! New locations will be open the more your characters sin and feed more energy into hell via sins. Exploration will become a more widespread possibility if this is the case. However, if they stay on the righteous path, the hotel and what's in the immediate vicinity will be what remains open for exploration. This doesn't mean characters absolutely can't explore beyond the gates of Penance, but it will be full of dangers and they will likely end up dead.
Will there be any physial changes my character undergoes?
The more characters sin or refuse to follow through with punishments, the more demonic they will start to appear. This will be up to player discretion for the most part. Maybe they start to grow horns, maybe they start to get fangs or hooves or tails. Whatever sort of demonic parts tickle your fancy are entirely fine. Demonic marks may start to appear as soon as the second month after refusing punishment or after sinning.
Are canon updates allowed?
Yes. ICly, characters are told that they aren't allowed to leave until they've cleared their name. However, that won't stop them from occasionally waking up changed and with new knowledge of their home worlds. None of the NPCs will be able or willing to answer this if your character asks. OOCly, please submit your canon update to the appropriate page, list all the new knowledge your character will gain, and go to town. Characters aren't required to take a hiatus during this time or wait for mod approval.
What happens if my character dies?
They'll be revived within a day and wake in their room at the hotel. For a few days, they'll feel very ill with hangover-like symptoms. If they were murdered, depending on how it was done, there may be a very visible scar left behind that will ache for a while afterwards. Please note that the more deaths a character experiences outside of events, the longer the effects will last. They may also become severe depending on how many times the character dies.
Can characters kill each other outside of events?
Yes, but it will be added to the murderer's sins and not remove anything from the victim's own list.
What are the policies on triggering topics such as abuse/rape/incest, etc?
Considering the nature of the game, all of these will be allowed in game, but please remember to warn for these topics whenever they come up! And, of course, discuss OOCly before springing it on anyone.
Will my character be allowed to kill any NPCs?
There are many low level demons going about their business throughout Penance, but they're still fairly strong. Characters may kill these demons without mod permission, but it won't be an easy task. This will also be very frowned upon ICly and may have demons acting more aggressively towards sinners.
So sex will be allowed?
Sure, and encouraged most likely. That said, warnings for underage sex and any kinks should always be included somewhere in the thread.
What happens if I fail AC?
If you can make at least partial AC, you can take a strike that won't have any immediate effect. You will submit AC the next month normally, but if you fail it a second time in a row, then you'll be removed from the game. The mods are trying to keep AC lenient, but this may be reevaluated at a later date if it's necessary.
What happens ICly when a hiatus is taken?
There are a few options! If the hiatus is only for a few days or so, it can be assumed that characters are just hanging around the hotel, minding their own business and nothing in particular has happened. If it's a week or longer, it can be assumed characters disappeared into one of Lucifer's secret torture chambers. What happens to your character and if they remember it is left up to player discretion. Were they just kept in isolation? Were they tortured? Both are likely! It's also just as likely Lucifer removed their memories of the events.
What happens ICly when a character is dropped?
Characters in the game will be told the guest has checked out by the hotel staff and that communication will be impossible unless they return. Characters are free to suspect that this isn't the whole story or that something has happened to the character dropped if they'd like!
My character is sick in canon, so how will this be handled in game?
While not healed, if it's something that may interfere with their participation, characters will be given something that will keep the illness manageable.
What should be expected of monthly events?
Each event will have plenty of options for both punishment and sinning with each event. Punishments will involve physical and psychological torments, as well as chances for characters to punish one another. Corruption options will vary from sin to sin. Some may be sexual in nature or deal with other vices. Some may include doing work for the demons around you, etc. All events will be opt out and as varied as possible.
Will alcohol and drugs be easily obtained or found?
Of course. There will be a bar located in the hotel and you can ask or look around to find pretty much anything else you want. They're demons, not saints.
Will there be any other forms of entertainment like libraries, video games, etc?
There will be a library, although the quality of books you may find there will be a bit... off. Or terrible. Hell doesn't get the newest reading material. At a later date, there may be the option of characters being able to bargain for other forms of entertainment with the local demons.
Are there any animals around? Can they be kept?
Demonic ones, yes. Hell hounds, things that want to eat you, etc. It's not recommended that these be kept as pets as they're very unpredictable and have vicious tendencies, but if a character is determined enough or suicidal enough then they can try it.
What supplies can be found? What about food?
The kitchens in the hotel are well stocked with a variety of food. There's also a duty free shop located in the lobby of the hotel for anything not found elsewhere. Clothing and other items may be found around Penance in some of the abandoned buildings or requested from hotel staff. Keep in mind that it may be limited.
What's the network like?
Functional, but it's also hell. Cell and wifi reception won't be great. Characters are allowed to make all the usual types of network posts and keep inboxes for private conversation. There is something like an internet around but it's localized, so sorry, no cute kitten videos... not the kind anyone would want to see anyway.
Please keep in mind that the network may be slow at times, or not functional at all. There may be errors that will post private photos or texts publicly occasionally, so watch those nudes or complaints about that jerk who always hogs the toilet in your room.
On the plus side, anonymous posting is available. Have fun trolling!
My character doesn't believe in hell. What now?
It's okay, hell believes in you and it knows every dirty little thought you've had and deed you've done. It doesn't matter how characters view their situation since they'll be trapped either way.
As noted above, this game isn't solely about redemption. There will be plenty of options for characters to dive head first into sin or just stay neutral for the most part.

Applications / Updates
What is a CRAU? Can we make our own AUs?
CRAU is for those who want to bring a character that's undergone changes at previous games that they would like to keep.
Do you accept CRAU characters from games not hosted on Dreamwidth?
We fully welcome them! Your CRAU doesn't have to be from a DW game. Just list the changes the character has gone through and what new knowledge they have.
This also applies to other instances, including a sandbox continuation of a closed DWRP game. It does not apply to PSLs, Bakerstreet meme threads, or 1-on-1 Tumblr threads.
Would I be able to "canon update" from a canon character to a CRAU at a later time?
Since CRAUs are allowed to take one of the three spot limits for a character, you would have to choose to either app in as a CRAU or from the original canon.
Suppose there is already a CRAU version of a character in the game. Would it be possible to app the original canon version as well?
It's fine to app the original canon version as well!
If a CRAU character has been in several games, could they keep all of their history? Would they only be allowed to app in from one game?
That's fine to bring a longer game history. Just briefly sum up any changes they went through in these games so we have an idea of how they differ from canon.
Where does one note that they are apping a CRAU character?
There is a CRAU portion of the app to explain how your character differs from canon! Additionally, you can add a note to the subject, i.e. "Character Name | Series (CRAU) | Reserved/Not reserved."
Are there restrictions on what counts as a "Canon AU"?
Canon AUs are alternate versions that have appeared in a published source material. For instance, the Star Trek mirrorverse characters would be considered canon AUs. The presence of a Mirror Captain Kirk would count as one of the three versions allowed in the game. The same would apply to interpretations in other mediums.
What is the policy on malleable protagonists and player characters from MMORPGs?
Malleable protagonists and MMORPG characters are accepted! They will be placed under their canon's name on the taken page.
Are you allowed to app without a reserve if no one else has reserved the character?
Yes, definitely! A reserve isn't required to app.
If my character has a ton of powers, could I link to them instead of describe them all?
You can provide a link to powers. We just need to see what they have so we can get an idea of how to make them compatible with game mechanics.
Can new items be brought in after a canon update?
If it's an important item to the character, they may reappear with an additional item after a canon update. They would not count toward the item limit from the original app. They could also return from an update with a different outfit or bearing any physical changes.
I forgot to include an important item when I applied!
You could canon update the character and have them bring it along then. Otherwise, they could request their item from Lucifer.
Could I app two characters from the same canon?
As long as the characters wouldn't have to interact, then we allow characters from the same canon to be played.
Is there a maximum number of apps we can submit during a single round?
The maximum is two apps per player in a single app round.
After being accepted, how long should a new player wait before playing?
Players may start playing in the game as soon as they're accepted into the community. There is no need to wait for their information to be added to general pages. The Player Contact information is used to arrange AC reporting, but your play will still count.
Could I canon update from an anime to a continuation in a manga or book series?
We will evaluate this on a case-by-case basis. If there is no real difference between manga/anime, we will allow it, but this will not be allowed in cases where a manga and anime are different enough to be considered separate universes.
I want to change my journal name. What should I do?
It's completely all right to change a journal name! Just comment to the usual places letting us know when you've picked your new username and we'll get it set up on our end. In the past, players also made a post to the OOC community just letting everyone know about the swap, but that's all you really need to worry about.
Lucifer
How would characters know how to contact Lucifer? Would they be told to talk to him for hard to get items, or to attempt to make deals?
Lucifer is the first voice they hear in the nightmare before their arrival and additionally, he'll be listed in their device's contacts before they add anyone else.
Does Lucifer give any special treatment to sins committed in his name? Do devil worshipers receive preferential treatment?
If the character continues to do work in his name, there may be some special perks to be had for them! Otherwise, they will be added to the list the same as other sins.
Are characters free to try and attack Lucifer at any point?
They can try! He is a fallen angel, so he's got a few tricks up his sleeve to defend himself. Characters will also be punished for the attempt.
My character requested something from Lucifer! Now what?
Once approved, characters will find their request waiting in their room.
Setting
Are characters allowed to keep prostheses, cybernetic enhancements, artificial limbs, etc? Would it they replaced with something more Hell-fitting?
Unless they somehow mess with the game mechanics, they would be left intact! There may be the chance for future, more Hell-ish upgrades in the future though.
Would it be possible to team up with and/or aid Hell forces at some point in the future?
Possibly in the future, yes! There will also be plenty of options during events to get in on torture and the like under the guise of penance.
Do they actually need to eat and sleep? Are they technically dead?
For now, they will still feel the need to eat/sleep/keep normal routines. We'll explore just how alive they are later in the game.
How does hell handle language differences?
It's generally agreed that characters speak/write a common language, likely through magical intervention. They may insert some of their own languages here and there, either spoken or written, or work on trying to understand common hell languages, but most communication should be understood.
When a character is dropped, do they disappear? What happens to their belongings and sin lists?
They'll be told by the staff that the guest checked out and that there will be no further contact or way to get in touch unless they return to the hotel. It is an open rumor that characters who drop are considered "redeemed" and no longer need to retain residency. This rumor has yet to be proven true.
Are religious items allowed? How do the hellish residents feel about them?
They are, yes! Some residents will feel neutral about them while others may react derisively or get aggressive.
Is there anything sun-like or that could potentially create vampire-frying UV rays?
Generally speaking, vampires should be able to walk around freely without worry of getting burnt.
Is there a sun that would concern characters with sun-based sleep cycles?
The skies are consistently polluted and an infernal orange during the day and nearly black at night. There's no telling whether there's an actual sun or not, but the general light pattern will shift in a way that resembles day/night.
Is there a moon that would affect were-creatures?
There is no visible moon in the sky. Were-creatures would be affected on a monthly cycle unique to their biology, similar to menstruation. Players can pick a day of the month and have it be their character's transformation day, even if that day doesn't match other similar creatures.
If someone was going to try to investigate air vents/service tunnels/service entrances how would that go?
They could, but they'd probably be very small and full of nasties like insects, or rats, demonic or otherwise. There are also tiny little mischief-making demons running around that could conceivably cause an issue.
My character is a genius and read through a lot of the library! What did they find?
They would be able to find plenty of books in the library that deal with Judeo-Christian-based Hell and any equivalents found in other religions, some maybe not even quite known to humans. Whether they're fictionalized or scholarly texts on the matter, or even cheesy self-help books where people have claimed to have died, gone to hell, and come back is up to players. There's also generalized books you'd find in any library in the world, ranging from anything under the sun from non-fiction to trashy romance. They may all be fairly old or worn though, keep in mind!
Human skin-bound books contain materials dealing with dark magic, blood magic, etc. It may tell specifics on certain types of demons from succubi to soldier demons, etc. There shouldn't be many consequences unless they try to cast a spell!
How big is the library? Does it house any non-written collections (artifacts, a/v records, etc) that sinners can access?
It's the largest collection in Hell. There are records, artifacts, videos, etc. all available at the library with varying levels of access. Usually cutting deals with demons work, but the goblins in the library tend to be more interested in old valuable items, magics, or books they may lack. There are certain sections that may not be unlocked during this point in the game.
If someone wants an item of clothing from a specific period in fashion, would it be available?
There are boxes of clothes in the basement where characters are free to find whatever kinds of clothing they want. Staff may also provide clothes if asked specifically for them, but there's no promise that they'll get exactly what they want.
How prevalent is scrap in Hell? What kinds of metal trash is available to be repurposed?
Most scrap items should be easily salvaged from the setting, but supplies aren't infinite. Small projects should be fine, but check back in if you're planning anything substantial. There might also be additional resources available in the supply cubbies of characters who've been around for a while. We encourage collaboration and pooling together resources.
Is there any way to quickly send physical mail?
The staff will benot so glad to do it! Although they might need something to sweeten the deal a bit if they're delivering far outside the hotel. A post office was established in outside Hellburbia during Barbas' lockdown, but it is not currently staffed.
My character is a demon. Would the game mechanics work differently for them?
This hell is different than the hell from other canons. As a result, PC demons could still go through physical changes in game as this hell corrupts them (or not, if they choose the path to redemption.)
The demonic hosts would likely be kinder to a demon resident. The other demons/creatures that roam outside tend to be more ferocious and less forgiving, but it would all depend on how a player character approaches the situation.
They would not feel any extra sway regarding the game's normal corruption mechanics. All sinners feel the same amounts of temptation from game events.
If my character is paying attention to NPC demons, what would they generally know about them?
Feel free to make up any range of names you want for general NPCs ranging from human sounding ones to demonic. There are some official names listed on the NPC page, and we keep an open space for players to log descriptions of player-created NPCs. You can add new entries through this post.
The demons likely interact just like anyone else. They talk, they laugh, they fight, they gruesomely torture together, etc. If a character wants to get involved, they can settle bickering in the bar over drinks, over who gets to do which chore, who gets to go fetch the next sinner for a torture, etc. The staff also does bicker with sinners on occasion.
As long as it's nothing that effects overall game plot, please feel free to interact with demon NPCs as much as you want. If you're uncertain and have something specific in mind, reach out to a mod.
What's demonic foot traffic like in the warehouse/library/forest? Do demons kind of roam around like truant teenagers, or are they out of the gates once their shift is up?
The demons tend to inhabit a lot of the worn down buildings within the gates of Penance. The warehouse tends to be a happening spot for young demons to hang out and they often have raves or other types of parties. Think delinquent teenagers! Otherwise, the staff tends to live at the hotel the same as sinners, and the demons that just inhabit Penance can be seen going about any normal activities as one would (with a potential hellish slant). Some demons go out hunting a lot for food or to gather necessities beyond the gates.
Can the entities in the warehouse be conversed with?
Ghosts may be interacted with! Generally, you can just have fun with some of the damned souls and find out how they died and why they're haunting everything. If you want something specific, please feel free to hit up a mod. Just note that these ghosts tend to just be average souls and will interact in the same ways you see on campy ghost hunting shows.
Is it possible to start a garden?
Characters can barter with demons to gain seeds and a small space to start a garden. Much of hell is fairly barren, but there are small spaces that can accommodate growing life.
At this time, the greenest space is the park in Hellburbia, which was donated by Mammon.
The hopsital info says that the maximum length of a stay is 2 weeks. Can that be extended for a longer hiatus?
It can definitely be extended if you need it.
My character is a zombie. What kind of accommodations are available?
Dietary restrictions will still apply, but they will still be available in the kitchens. The supply will be made to accommodate the guests, brains or otherwise. A predatory character could also harvest from sinners or demons if they chose, but is discouraged and may result in punishments.
My character carries an infectuous curse/disease. Would it spread here?
Since Penance deals with a lot of potential situations for contact with blood or sexual scenarios, the ability to spread infections or "turn" other characters would be more difficult/require repeated contact between individuals. This does not mean he is entirely free of being contagious, but we'll leave it up to OOC communication between involved players. There are no accidental zombie infections, but there might be a small, brief, outbreak arranged among consenting players. However, Demons will be immune.
Can my character build a tank?
We discourage making moves toward things that break the spirit of the game. We are open to listening to proposals from players, but it is unlikely that someone will be allowed to cobble together a fighter jet or nuclear bomb without an impressive explanation of why they need it to develop their characterization arc.
Can my character make ammunition?
Supplies would be available if a character wanted to look for it. However, we don't think it would be necessary to make it from scratch. Nobody is keeping a bullet inventory in the threads we write.
Additionally, the archery / range has a supply of rubber bullets and nonlethal practice supplies.
Is it possible to upgrade a player-run business?
The only way to get better equipment for businesses would be to barter with local demons, but there's still no promise that it will be particularly modern. Or work. "Nice" things will be difficult to acquire. This is a game set in hell, and things should never get too comfortable. It could be a good place to get player characters together to construct custom items. It is possible to request something big from Lucifer.
What piercing supplies are available for use?
Piercing supplies should be fairly easy to come by, but sanitation is less easy. It depends what demon a character talks to. Maybe they gets the guy who knows what a piercing gun is and can help dig one up from the basement, or maybe they're stuck interacting with an older demon who thinks every septum piercing should be done with a carved elephant tusk. Go with the route most fun for you.
Housing
Can characters move furniture in the temporary rooms?
They can change a little, but keep in mind that the room is very tiny and a lot of customization probably can't be made.
Several characters want to move into a room together. Is there a special procedure to request it?
There's no wait time to move to a four person suite after the initial temporary rooming assignment. You'll find the forms to submit your request on the housing page.
My character is bigger than the average human. Are the rooms big enough?
Hell's full of magic and Lucifer wants his guests to be comfortable. There are sympathetic larger demons who might be willing to prepare a larger space.
Can my character have a better room?
Sinners can apply for the higher level rooms available, provided they can submit the OOC requirements on the housing page.
Can characters redecorate marriage suites?
Sinners can toss out whatever they don't wish to keep. It will not be replaced. They can also move furniture around and add decorations with what they can find in the basement. Keep in mind basement items are probably very old, not high end, and previously used, torn and otherwise misused.
My character doesn't want to live with other people. Can they break into an empty room and sleep there?
Room upgrades have OOC requirements that are not superceded by IC desires. Sinners will be repelled by any room they are not assigned to, other than what another sinner invites them into.
There is always sleeping in the lobby out in public, or other public areas, like the basement. Or perhaps they would like to camp out under the starless sky? Maybe they can put together tattered blankets to make a tent.
If a character already has an upgraded room and then marries someone, could they also have a marriage suite and gift it to their spouse?
Suites are not giftable items. In these cases, married couples can live in the upgraded room together. If the players wish for the characters to have two places, it is possible for one character to claim a house while the other claims a suite. Then both can go back and forth as long as the other character allows them in their allotted place.
Marriage Suites were established by Barbas during an attempt to force monogamy. Due to the factors of their creation, parties that live in a marriage suite would give up their other living arrangements. If this is a case of a player/character wanting an upgraded suite, they will have to apply for one based on their own activity.
Network/Technology
Can my character jailbreak the devices and upgrade them?
Hacking is fine! Parts might be a challenge. Most technology will veer towards the very old, just as the old phone characters receive when they arrive. They can barter and make deals with the local demons for what they want, which they may or may not receive. If you would like to request a a more specialized item, you can do so here.
Can a new arrival read back to older posts on the network?
The character can certainly read back on the network, as long as they're reading unlocked posts.
Can one character have multiple usernames?
Yes! Names are easily changed on the network and may be adjusted whenever a character wants. Unless posted anonymously, it will be tied back to the user's device, however.
Is there a text-to-voice or voice-to-text translation function for the network?
There is! The staff will begrudgingly show how to use it if asked.
Does tech from home work?
Tech from home would likely still work, though it might require a little tinkering before it can connect to anything.
Could you confirm whether the "additional tinkering" could allow the character to view and post to the network instead of needing to use the in-game device provided?
Accessing the network requires intervention from staff demons. But characters should probably keep in mind they'll be snooping through their personal stuff and being really invasive about it while they do it.
Is anything bugged in a way that a trained eye could discover?
There's surveillance throughout Penance, but generally, as a powerful angel, Lucifer has other means of keeping tabs on everyone. There may be a camera here or there on the street lamps, but nothing obvious or major.
Game text references both blackberries and first-gen smartphones for the devices provided in-game. Is there a guideline over who would receive what?
New arrivals all get first-gen smartphones. They used to be Blackberries, but were upgraded about a while ago. Characters who have been in game for a long time might still have the older model.
Injuries/Deaths
I know a character's illness isn't fully healed upon arrival. What about injuries obtained at their canon point?
This is up to player discretion. They can arrive with injuries unhealed unless they're life threatening. Anything that could kill them will be patched right on up!
What happens with disfiguring/crippling injuries? Will staff fix them up, or would it get fixed on a death-reset?
Disfiguring will be left up to player discretion. Scars do tend to stay behind, this would include from blades, fires, etc. Crippling injuries would be fixed up by staff, albeit painfully. It would take a few days to be entirely back to normal.
How permanent are non-lethal punishment effects?
There will be scars left if the wound is bad enough and minor injuries won't heal any faster than they normally would. Cuts or burns, etc. If it's a more extreme injury like a missing limb, then characters would be stitched back together by the demons. How horrible it will be will depend on what the player prefers and how annoying they are to the demon!
If I wanted to play the aftermath of a debilitating injury, could I heal them months later with a death?
Death would be the simplest option to heal a longstanding injury. When a character is revived, Lucifer personally restores them. If a player wishes to heal an old injury without the trauma of a death, a character could request Lucifer's assistance, for a price.
Sins
What counts as a sin?
This game operates on there being a certain few 'universal' sins that everyone can agree upon. Murder, stealing, knowingly hurting others, etc. are all sins that will be listed no matter what.
Then there are sins that characters feel are wrong. These can be open to interpretation and how much guilt a character has on the matter. If they felt a dumb decision led to someone else's death or suffering and feel they have responsibility for it, then it can count towards their list.
Similarly, even if a character doesn't feel guilty but they know others would consider it wrong, that can still count towards the list as well.
If a character isn't interested in repenting, would this game be a good fit?
That's fine! Characters don't have to be actively remorseful or seeking redemption. It's entirely fine if you'd rather have your character focus more on the corruption aspect. A a matter of fact, Hell would rather like it.
Are repeated sins counted separately or would character just get an umbrella "murder" if they've committed it in droves?
This is up to player discretion and how the character would think about deaths. Just murder is fine. Murder x a number is fine. Grouping them by situation, etc. Whatever would be easiest for you! And yes, that would be acceptable for someone who has a fairly long list!
Do transformative punishments happen right away?
Transformations won't happen straight away, so there will be time to undo them! Sins can be removed every time a thread containing a punishment is completed.
My character has absorbed souls. Does the character who absorbed the souls also take the sins of the people they've merged with?
If the souls are separate entities and not part of the main character's personality, then they wouldn't take on those sins! Not unless, for some reason, they felt responsible for them.
If a character is dropped in the middle of a thread, can it still count as a completed thread for sin removal?
The thread is still considered completed for the character remaining in the game.
If an amnesiac character hasn't committed a sin but thinks they might have done it, will it be on their list?
Ultimately, sins are left largely up to player discretion aside from a few main ones, so it really is your judgement call.
If a character was forced to commit murder, does it still count against them?
This will be left up to player discretion! If your character would feel responsible or knows that others would consider it a sin, it can certainly count.
What if a character committed a sin without realizing it?
It would be fine if a player wanted their character to discover spoilers through their sin list.
Can a sin be added later if a character realizes it was wrong in retrospect?
Yes! You can add additional sins whenever you'd like.
Can we specify what sins we're looking to remove?
Generally, sins are removed at random via RNG when threads are submitted. However, if there's something in particular you'd like removed, you can note it somewhere in the comment.
What happens if a character continues doing the sin they want to redeem?
If a character continues to perform the sin, they will not be able to remove the sin. Generally, sins are randomly removed from lists, but may be added back at any time.
If my character redeems all their sins, do they just vanish?
The redemption process won't look any particular way. After the character says their goodbyes, Lucifer will escort them out of the hotel where they will fall asleep before they realize what's happening. They will then wake up in a strange room with a golden door. Lucifer will congratulate them and tell them to go through it and meet their future. They won't remember what happens next beyond a bright light.
After a character is redeemed, can I canon update them and return with fresh sins?
Yes, you can bring them back after a canon update. All angelic features would be wiped clean and it would be like restarting all over again for them, though they may keep their memories of Penance prior. Lucifer will scold them thoroughly for the mistakes that brought them back.
If a character can complete a second list of sins, would they be able to request returning home to a different time?
A double-redeemed sinner could request to return anywhere they like, within reason. Please speak with a mod about specifics.
Can resolving conflicts with NPCs count towards redemption?
Being helpful generally helps towards redemption! It also garners positive impressions from the demons and makes them more likely to consider a character as a friend.
Powers
Would healing spells/healing magic be completely useless, or just less effective than they might normally be?
Healing magic would be fine to use unless the event in question notes otherwise. Please keep in mind that the spell wouldn't be able to remove any scars a wound would leave behind, nor would it be able to mask it with any illusion.
Would powers that can numb body parts or remove pain need to be nerfed?
Those would be nerfed even if the character wouldn't be inclined to use it, yes.
Where do you stand on teleportation?
Teleportation works around the hotel and areas local to it. Characters will not be able to teleport out of the dimension and if they try to go somewhere blindly, they may end up in really disturbing places or situations. In the middle of hellfire, a boiling river of blood, etc.
My character can heal through physical contact. Does the ability stay intact?
Contact-based healing abilities work in a limited capacity with the potential of possibly unlocking it later if a character makes a good case of it being useful to hell's side.
Can characters keep powers acquired in other games through CRAU?
Yes, characters may keep their powers acquired through other games.
Would a canon update include new power gains/abilities that come with the new canon point?
Yes, your character would have access to their new abilities provided they don't break game mechanics. If you aren't sure about the mechanics of a power, feel free to reach out to a mod.
My character has the ability to charm demons. How would that work in this game?
It could work mildly well on lower class demons! Higher-ups would not fall for any sort of charm.
Transformations
Avoiding a punishment means a player might start to transform. When two player characters are threading punishments, is transforming a requirement for both?
It would apply to both of them in this case, since being the punisher is also part of the punishment. If either of them fails, then they'll both have to deal with the fallout.
Are there guidelines/visual examples for transformations?
There certainly is! You'll find some starter ideas on our Demonic Features Guide. Please don't be afraid to be creative with things! That guide is a starter, not a limiter.
The guide mentions that redemption perks include divine protection. What does that mean?
Divine protection just means that the demons will be deterred from outwardly attacking or undermining them from now on. They may recoil from him or sneer, but generally be on their way outside of arranged punishments.
Can I give my character wings for redemption?
Wings are fine! So are halos.
Creatures, Pets, and Parasites
Would a magical familiar be allowed?
If the familiar doesn't have a discernible personality or needs of an actual pet, that would probably be fine to continue to summon.
What constitutes a pet from home? Can it only be something organic, or would something mechanical pass for a pet?
Something mechanical can be requested from back home/treated as a pet. Any upkeep/maintenance will fall on the character who requested it.
My character is blind. Could they bring a guide dog?
Unfortunately, they would not be able to bring a guide dog. However, characters could earn back their dog in-game or possibly find a hell hound that would suit their needs.
My character is a vessel that is used by another character in their canon. How would this work in game?
If the dominating character has enough personality to be appable, the connection will be cut off without any ill effects. Should the dominating character arrive at a later time, we hope the players will find an arrangement that works for everyone on an OOC level. Mods will be happy to facilitate more specific cases as needed.

Applications
Plot & Premise
Game Mechanics
IC Mechanics

The staff will be
My character is a demon.
