Premise

What if God and the Devil made a bet?

You remember a dream.

Or maybe nightmare is more accurate.

It was full of hellfire nipping at your skin and a sensation of being pulled down no matter how much you struggle or cry for help. Your surroundings were engulfed into flames until you began to fall, endlessly. It was hot. It wreaked of sulfur. Tasted like ash. Your fingers clamored for something, anything, to no avail. Then, a voice arose from the stifling darkness echoing in all directions. It was smooth like silk, hypnotizing, demanding of your attention.

"Judgement has come upon you, but not to worry. It can still be undone."

You have died, and here in this endless free fall you are promised redemption for your sins. You can return to your life anew or be granted eternal life in Heaven. All you need to do is repent and it starts with one simple action.

Give up.
Just. Stop. Struggling.

And so you do. You hit a mercifully soft surface soon after.

Waking is no easy task. Your body feels heavy, like you've been asleep for a week. Coming to consciousness, you draw up an uncomfortable conclusion: that was no dream. Wherever you are, a hotel room it seems, it is not where you once had been.

A look around the room done up in red, you realize you're on a bed. There's a window to your left and a tiny TV in the corner. The walls are bare barring a few hellish paintings. Beside you on the night table is a piece of parchment with a list of sins scrawled in blood. Your sins. You become instantaneously aware that your palm stings and realize there's a deep cut there. The blood is yours.

This paper cannot be burned. Cannot be crumpled. Cannot be torn. Throw it away? It returns.

There's a device that looks like an old Blackberry phone and a few of your belongings in the room. Looking out the window shows a gated hellscape full of jagged terrain and unfriendly fire. Stepping out, you'll see dimly lit halls for you to traverse down. You may run into demonic staff wandering about busying themselves with various tasks on your travel. Inevitably, you'll run into fellow sinners like yourself.

The one thing you won't be able to find is an exit out of this nightmare.

Welcome to Penance.

penancerp is an 18+ horror game based in hell with a central mechanic of redemption vs corruption. Players can expect monthly events, player plot opportunities, and a larger over-arching storyline involving the politics and structure of Hell (and Heaven) itself. Characters are given a real opportunity for either option, but since damned souls fuel hell, the temptation to do bad will be far more prevalent. Monthly events will frequently center on physical and psychological torment, body horror, pitting characters against one another, exploration, navigating through hell and its inner workings and more. The more your character gives into temptation the more they will find themselves... changing. This game is sex-friendly and will deal with many potentially triggering topics. Welcome to Hell, folks.
