Bestiary

NPCs

Horses
1 | 2 | 3

These fine creatures come in all shapes and forms, ranging from what most would consider familiar to downright horrifying. While some may be tamed, others are naturally aggressive towards sinners and will undoubtedly attack.

These creatures tend to enjoy meat of questionable sources, brushing, and (some) enjoy careful petting and attention. The ones who don't will let you know it.

In any case, it's recommended that all sinners use caution when approaching horses spotted outside the Penance Community. Within, there should be a member of staff nearby just in case things take a southward turn untilt he animals are accustomed to the sinner. The staff does offer riding lessons for those interested.

Adoptability: Medium to Difficult.

Hounds

1 | 2 | 3

While these guys tend to be naturally aggressive, they come in all shapes and sizes! Some may look similar to earth breeds ranging from chihuahuas to pit bulls that have been twisted by Hell in disgusting ways. Some can breathe fire, others drip acid, and still more just have a nasty bite!

Generally, they are just dogs despite their demonic natures. They may be tamed and they may develop affection for sinners as they feed them or take care of them. Some may even show a caring side if their master is patient enough (and willing to ruin a perfectly good hound!). That said, they will always have a tendency towards violence, particularly if they're guarding people they feel protective towards.

They tend to prefer raw meats over any other types of food. Some may even assume sinners are snacks... no doubt encouraged by the staff for laughs.

Adoptability: Easy to Hard, depends on the type and the hound.

Coal Tars
These guys are not natives to Hell. They were brought here seemingly through a magical mishap and have just lingered. They mostly tend to reside in the basement, but some may sneak out on occasion.

They are a tiny, airborne demon that possesses fungi, flecks of dust, and dirt. They seem to be very attracted to dark, dank places, as well as humans with dark natures. They eagerly follow around those who come to the basement if they fit this criteria.

It's best to be careful around these little guys, however! Breathing in their dust particles can make one's lungs rot right away.

Adoptability: Easy for those possessing a dark soul.

Squonks

These creatures are no larger than mid-sized dogs, some may be even smaller. They're known around Hell with contempt as being whiny and easy to pick on.

Ashamed of their looks, Squonks regularly try to hide in holes they dig in the ground, or in tight spaces. They can be heard crying in misery over their shame and tend to often be... slick with mucous and tears. Some have fine sprigs of fur here and there, others have scaly and dry skin. They're never quite pleasant to hold, unfortunately.

Overall, these creatures are harmless. Herbivores by nature, they aren't aggressive towards sinners or demons. The locals will also let you know they make one amazing roast too!

Adoptability: Easy if shown kindness.

Demiurge Minions

1

Brought over by another magical mishap, these blue creatures stand no taller than one's knee. They're extremely cheerful and friendly, often reciting Demiurge in remembrance of their master. They are also easily taught new names and simple words by those who care to try.

Not aggressive in the slightest, these little creatures clearly don't belong in Hell. They are eager to please and cuddly cute. Herbivores, they rely on others to give them food.

At one point, the local demons tried to eat them. Now they can be seen running around the hotel and other establishments helping out with chores they're capable of doing. Sometimes they're in little bellhop uniforms around the hotel, other times they're bare as nature intended.

Adoptability: Easy.

Hogs
Aggressive and intimidating, these hogs come in all shapes and sizes. Some secrete poison so sinners are cautioned to be careful when approaching them.

It's a little known fact that most meat in Penance comes from these guys. Staff is not above enlisting sinner help slaughtering these beasts and prepping them up for dinner.

Adoptability: Hard.

Long Furbies
A remnant from Hellburbia, these guys are a known nuisance around the hotel and Penance in general. They scurry around like mice and are known to slip into beds to watch others while they sleep. They tend to bite if given the chance, but overall, don't seem too deadly.

It's unknown what they eat or what they do. Some are worried about a mother living in the sewers birthing these hideous creatures, but honestly, who wants to go down and check it out?

Adoptability: ???

Bone Birds

These birds are about the size of ravens, but it’s hard to tell what type of bird they are as they lack any flesh or feathers and are just bones. They showed up before winter one year, the sinners were told not to feed them, but they fed them anyway. The result, the birds stuck around and started to belittle and mock the sinners. They constantly whisper in sinner’s ears, but anyone that feeds them, they will attach themselves to. Despite their words, they can be very loyal to someone they’ve claimed.

They are jealous of other birds with feathers, so if anyone adopts them and brings home a feathered bird, be prepared for envy, mockery, and possible bullying.

Adoptability: Easy, but they will constantly threaten anyone they get attached to, while still cuddling with them and having loving moments.

Chihuahuas

There are, indeed, normal, everyday chihuahuas running free around Hell. Sometimes you might run into one with horns, or sharper teeth than normal, but most are like any chihuahua that would be found on earth, normal sizes, and includes the regular different breeds.

Hopefully no one runs into one that was crossbred with a hellhound.

Adoptability: Easy, about the same as any regular chihuahua.

Murder Cats

These 2-6 pounds cats have black feet, and black spots over a light brown coat. However, they can tear a person apart in seconds. They peer at people with their adorable, soulful kitten-like eyes, then pounce if anyone stares too long.

Adoptability: Hard, unless the individual is able to come back from being cut up by their claws. They are highly dangerous.

Lilith IIs

During one of his stays, Mammon helped set up a park in Hellburbia, and donated plants from his personal stash. Amongst those, round plants with mouths and teeth. They’re fairly small, but are able to follow sinners around. They feed off of blood and hold a grudge.

Adoptability: Medium to Difficult - they are feisty, but will stick around with anyone that feeds them their preferred liquid diet. They especially love angel blood.

Dragons (Small)

The dragons start off as babies no larger than the palm of a hand and will never grow bigger than a common chihuahua. They range in temperament from affectionate and loyal to feisty and protective of their masters. It should be noted that these little carnivores may also come equipped with fire breath or a light to moderate toxic bite if provoked. None of this would be enough to kill anyone, but it should probably be watched out for...

Can be acquired: In the pet shop, The Spoiled Pet, in Mammon’s Land Adoptability: Medium as they are small and devoted to their sinners, just be aware of feisty ones, and the different breaths, and the ones with toxic bites.

Dragons (Mountain/Cliff dwellers)

There are much larger dragons, capable of carrying off a grown person, who live in the mountains of Mammon’s land. They are attracted to shiny things and people with pure personalities (including pure dark traits), and virgins. They have made off with sinners who met these qualities in the past, so beware if you see them flying overhead.

Adoptability: Hard - these dragons are very large, large enough to eat a person, and partial to their home in the mountains.

Spiders
CW: Caution, image in link below

Native to Hell, these spiders are larger than usual spiders are about the size of small chihuahuas. They tend to skitter into the hotel during the colder months. They are not shy about sneaking up on sinners and peering at their habits, or joining them in showers, or outright getting into their laps for a cuddle.

They’re typically docile and not dangerous.

Adoptability: Easy as they are curious about humans and (mostly) gentle.

Other Animals
It should be noted that there are all sorts of creatures living in Hell that are all nightmarish versions of what one may find similar from their home world. This ranges from flesh-eating Hell fish to giant rats that scurry around the hotel, to horrific bugs that like to dig into one's skin and eat them from the inside out!

On the other hand, there are a few normal pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. available at times. The demons typically import these down for dinner, but rescue attempts can be made if one wants a normal pet.

It should be noted that outside the gates of Penance are feral animals ranging from twisted elephant-like creatures, to large birds, and anything in between. Large bat-like creatures are known to attempt attacks on the Penance community, but the guards generally always manage to take care of them. Sinners need not worry! More animals of note will be added whenever they show up.
