HOTEL INFORMATION
Aug. 31st, 2019 08:45 pmPenance Hotel
The hotel is a large sprawling building sat in the middle of the Penance community. From the roof hang various gargoyles around the perimeter (but be careful, they might actually come alive). Decaying foliage can be found all around the grounds as vines in various states of life consume the exterior. Out back there’s stables where various demonic horses and hellhounds are kept.
Outside of the main doors is a large stone opening with grand demonic statues and a boiling fountain of… maybe it’s best to not know what that liquid is. Various benches are also available and a staircase leads down to the ground below.
Presently the building consists of:The main floor (lobby)
Five housing floors
A basement
A sub-basement
Outside/Stables
The sub-basement shelter has been resealed and does not appear on the elevator panels.
The hotel itself seems to be ever developing and ever changing per Lucifer's needs and wants. Like most things in Hell, once you’re inside it looks and feels a lot larger than it seemed from the outside and the distances between point A and point B all seem to change from day to day even if the locations stay the same.
But since a lava flood nearly destroyed the hotel, residents might notice that the the hotel occasionally seems a little less livable. At random, a warm, familiar hallway might seem covered in dingy ash, old and decaying. Mold covers dark crevices, to say nothing of the insects scurrying away from the first sign of light… But as quickly as the senses feel solid, another moment passes and they're gone. Staff will not acknowledge anything changed. You're probably just seeing things.
With every arrival of fresh damned souls, the hotel seems to thrive more than ever.
Wake Up Everyone tends to wake up in the same room initially. It's done up in red with a cushy bed, a window, an old TV in the corner on a desk, and a few Hieronymus Bosch paintings lining the wall. There's a bathroom to clean up in, but that's about all. Once someone leaves this room, they never find another room like it ever again.
Outside, the hallways are dimly lit with winding corridors that can feel like they go on forever and don’t make any particular sense. Red carpets and old wallpaper. Lights that sometimes flicker. Some rooms might be boarded up and for the curious, no amount of force will let someone in.
Like the room people wake in, there are eerie paintings lining the wall depicting hellscapes and various tortures. Occasionally, there will be almost innocent looking paintings of children at play or adorable animals, but upon closer inspection, their eyes will seem to follow you or there will be something that sends a chill straight through. Perhaps those puppies aren't tugging on a rope, but intestines or gnawing on severed limbs.
Sinners might stumble across the elevators at some point if they don’t want to take the stairs given they can find them. They’re old, gated, and feel somehow unsafe. Occasionally they stall or stop entirely, requiring the demonic staff to do repairs… seemingly at their leisure. The staff can also be seen bustling around cleaning or gathering laundry to be tended to.
Eventually, everyone hits the stairs leading down to the lobby...
Main Floor & Lobby Within the lobby, a bored looking demon in a suit stands at the front desk.
There's a sitting area located and a rather large stone fireplace. Like much of the hotel, strange paintings line the wall. Sometimes they seem to follow you as you pass or transform. Otherwise, it’s all actually quite comfortable. A few nice places to gather for a chat with some people and plush comfortable seating. Sometimes local demons are doing just that. Maybe they’re willing to speak with you, maybe not. Luckily there’s enough room to have your own little gathering.
The Main Floor is where the bulk of the action takes place.
Kitchen The Kitchens are quite expansive, although some of the appliances within might not always work so well. Sinners are welcomed to create their own meals given there doesn’t seem to be any room service or dine-in experience even if there’s a dining hall. Just be careful around things like the stoves. They may suddenly get too hot or turn off entirely. Same goes for the stove… and be careful with the blender. Sometimes it likes to blend things really well. When there’s no telling whether you’ll find a blender that came from 2002 or 1942, every smoothie is an adventure.
Overall, the kitchens are generally well-stocked. There's a large pantry with items for guests to feed themselves, as well as a refrigerator and freezer full of meat. It may, at times, be questionable. Some things are labelled dog or cat, or even human. There is always a fresh supply of blood for vampiric guests to make use of and any other special dietary items that sinners may need.
There's also some beer and other types of alcohol stocked for those who don't like to go to the bar.
( Back to Lobby )
Dining Hall A small walk from the kitchens lay the dining hall. A beautiful area with many long tables, booth benches, and even candles sticks to set the mood if you so desire. Here's where many large gatherings can take place, because what doesn't say a party like a host of food? Sinners may sit and eat with groups or choose to dine alone. Whatever strikes a mood.
Sinners are also free to throw their own fun gatherings here. Looking to take your mind off of things and perhaps host a dinner party? You may do so, and even better is that allowing demons to join as guests might get you some extra points in their books.
( Back to Lobby )
Ballroom Wandering a little further down one of the halls will lead sinners to the Ballroom. This area has been home to many grand evenings, even if some of them have resulted in bloodletting and violence. Nevertheless, it’s a versatile area and can be set up for a variety of occasions. Masquerades, or a more lavish dining experience and party. It has quite the modern sound system along with an area for live music to be played. The ballroom even comes with a catwalk, or balcony, that surrounds the entire perimeter of the room and has a large, expensive looking chandelier.
Strangely, though. This room is often locked. The doors open very rarely, typically only during times where higher ups have chosen to host events. A sinner might be able to convince someone to open the doors for them but this may require some sort of planning and request for access from a few demons. Potentially Lucifer or Lilith themselves. Although you’re welcome to use the dining hall!
( Back to Lobby )
Gift Shop Located to the right of the front desk is a small duty free shop that has anything ranging from Tylenol (that may or may not actually be Tylenol), pet food, random nick knacks, basic first aid, condoms, etc. There's a grouchy old demon who runs it and will always try to push potions on unsuspecting customers that have a wide range of effects (that may or may not actually be true).
( Back to Lobby )
Gym Guests will find a gym down one of the many hallways attached to the lobby. It has all the usual equipment from weights to machines. There’s a few heavy bags, speed bags, and an area to stretch. It may all look aged, but it works fine... mostly. The staff isn't responsible for anyone who gets flung from the treadmill into one of the mirrors lining the wall! Guests will be expected to get up and walk it off for the most part. No pain, no gain. Right?
( Back to Lobby )
Pool Attached to the Gym is a pool! A no nonsense pool. We promise, this pool is exactly that. A pool. A fairly large one, too! It has a depth of at least twelve feet at its deepest with a shallow end of 4 feet deep. While there’s nothing else fancy, not even a changing room, there’s a small shower head off to the side to wash yourself off before and after.
It’s important to note that this pool is expected to be maintained by the sinners. Staff will not come around to change the chlorine or check the levels, clean the waters, wash the tiles, bring fresh towels or anything. So while there’s no funny business happening, there’s also no service happening here either.
( Back to Lobby )
Kergak's Gifts and Things The project of an enterprising demon who sees value in the guests' sentimentality, Kergak's Gifts and Things is now open for business. There are cards for all sorts of occasions (including those Hell specific), stuffed animals, shirts, and other souvenirs one could want. There may even be a few live animals, such as fish or mice, etc. All with a hellish slant, but what difference does that make among friends? Who doesn't like a new pet?
The little shop is packed full of hidden treasures, and Kergak sits ever ready at the register to answer questions. He's a smart looking demon, with glasses and an old fashioned suit. If anyone asks him anything personal, he'll say he's been here for a long time, but in life he used to be a door-to--door salesman. What brought him to Hell? Well, now that's just rude and personal to ask a fellow. It certainly had nothing to do with his odd love of poisons, which coincidentally, are available behind the counter!
The rest of the shop has some... oddly personal items available too. Voodoo dolls of sinners and demons alike (except, curiously, Lilith or Lucifer), snapshots of sinners in varying moments of embarrassment or sin, and possibly a few items from sinners' homeworlds. These should be minor comfort items and nothing major. A favorite brand of candy? A preferred soda? Find it here!
There's also jewelry, perfumes, and other small items. Anything one might find in a normal gift shop! No need at all to visit that other guy down at the opposite wing. Screw that guy.
( Back to Lobby )
Torture Chamber Just across from the gym happens to be a room that's sole purpose seems to be torture. It has a collection of knives, whips, and other fun little instruments anyone could dream of. There's also a rather pristine iron maiden that's proudly displayed in a corner. There are tables and all types of or suspension devices that anyone may want for a good old fashion torture session. You might even be able to pick up some truth serum or other fun potions from the gift shop. Given Mr. Crabbypants Demon was actually telling the truth.
( Back to Lobby )
Helluva Cup This area is closed until further notice.
Helluva Cup is open for business and manned by demonic staff. It doesn't look too bad from the outside, but the coffee itself does always seem a tad on the too-strong side. They always seem to be running short on milk as well, pastries may seem old, etc. There are a lot of visual similarities to common establishments sinners may be know from back home at least!
It should be noted that the staff won't seem to understand any complaints about the pet hell rat, Bean, they keep caged out in the open. It's apparently the manager's beloved pet, even if it's as large as a medium sized dog with intimidating fangs. He's probably not contaminating the food or anything, but he does have a tendency to try and nip if someone gets too close to him.
( Back to Lobby )
Bar There's a bar located in the lobby that's frequently a bustling joint. A demon generally runs it and will provide drinks for anyone who desires, but no one will complain if you serve yourself or grab whatever you want. Every now and then you might catch a sinner behind the bar with them, or solo.
There's plenty of tables to sit for privacy, as well as games to play. A pool table, a dart board, and strip poker are frequent favorites of the patrons. There's also a jukebox that has possibly every song about Hell imaginable loaded on to it... and not much else. Everyone loves Sympathy for the Devil, right? Lucifer certainly does.
( Back to Lobby )
The Forbidden Room Down a long, daunting corridor in the lobby is a previously forbidden room where eerie screams from within call out, inspire a sickening curiosity that draws in those who are unfortunately near. This is followed by menacing laughter as the door swings open of its own accord. The room within is painted in nothing but darkness and a thick fog.
For those who would dare approach, they will be able to make out the outlines of chains hanging in wait from the ceiling, but most other details are obscured. There may be a brief flash of figures in the shadows, the stench of blood. This feels like a bad idea, but sinners are drawn forward anyway. There's something of a promise inside this room... something new and exciting, greater than anyone is capable of imagining!
You know what they say about curiosity and the cat, don't you?
Before common sense can win out, guests will find themselves pulled into the room and hear the gut-wrenching slam of the heavy door behind them. Once inside, guests will be able to make out the torn apart bodies on the ground, halved or nothing but splatters of guts and bone. Despite all logic, some will still be writhing and moaning still. Whether in pleasure or pain, it's difficult to tell
Look closer still and sinners may notice one has managed to scrawl with their bloody handprint:
There are no limits.
It may feel as if reading those words puts things into motion. Suddenly, one of the poor sinners will find the chains lashing out, hooks sinking in deep as they find their purchase on their bodies and pull. They will find themselves pulled into an almost gruesome mockery of a crucifixion pose. Arms drawn up, legs held in place. Clothes may be torn or shredded as their unmarked bodies are marred with the hooks. Flesh and muscle stretch under the strain. Fortunately, it doesn't go further.
Not yet.
"My dear guests, curiosity isn't always a beneficial thing... or is it? Have you truly lived, after all, if you haven't explored the depths to which pain can show our true selves? And with all the energy flowing around our little community, this room has opened itself back up. This is a room that had been locked off for a while now, and my children trapped within have found themselves rather bored lately," Lucifer's voice rings out within both ears of the sinners, eerily reassuring despite the hellscape in front of them.
"To entertain them, this room is being left open indefinitely for them. I want to show you the lengths Hell used to go to, the pain and pleasure mix of true torment. It's in suffering that we find our true selves. I do firmly believe that. We find out who we're meant to be, what we're meant to be, giving and receiving pain. Help one another and you will be set free!"
The fog dissipates enough to reveal a table nearby full of all sorts of horrifying instruments. Paddles, whips, some of them barbed in nauseating ways. There's wax to melt, knives. Needles to pierce flesh with. There are instruments that deliver enough electric current into the recipient to hurt and leave them writhing, gags for when their cries become too much. There are so many instruments of pain and potential that it's dizzying.
"Next to your instruments, you will find a list of sins and wrongdoings your lovely captive has done in their lives, both here and back home. Read it and punish accordingly. Remember, there is freedom in humiliation as well as pain. Force them to see who they truly are inside. There's also redemption to be found in the punishment. You are delivering God's divine justice! You are God's hand! He will be so pleased..."
In the shadows, there are those same figures standing in wait, ready to manipulate the hooks.
"You will have no more than four attempts to carry out your punishment. Failure or refusal to do so will result in another hook driving into our poor bound soul here. After your four attempts, I am sorry to say they will be torn apart by my friends in the shadows with you, and you will have murder added to the list of sins tainting you. It would be such a needless shame to fail at this, wouldn't it? And who knows, perhaps you'll find you adore this path..."
There's a short laugh from Lucifer, as if he just made a brilliant joke. "Succeed in your punishment and you will both be released with one more sin removed from your lists. Don't worry about any injuries... there are bandages and other aids available just outside. Now, my darlings, go have fun."
[As this is a Hellraiser based room, feel free to assume anything with a sadomasochistic bent to it can be found within. Attacking the demons controlling the chains will not stop them. They seem to be invulnerable to attacks and are only there to observe and add additional hooks when they deem fit. When a punishment is deemed worthy enough to release the hooked partner is left up to player discretion, but a character is only allowed to fail a punishment four times before they have to witness a horribly gory scene. To claim the removal of one sin from your list, please respond to the appropriate pages. Unlike other torture prompts, this is available at all times.]
( Back to Lobby )
Other Rooms There’s a dizzying number of other rooms on the main floor. Some of them look disused, others may be boarded off and/or impossible to open.
One particular room, rumored to be called the blood room shuts immediately upon entry and wont let a sinner out until they’ve bled substantially on it’s floors. Another room seems to have no other purpose but to spring traps on those who enter. Anything from the walls closing in to poison darts and large spikes. Other rooms are completely harmless and just don’t have a whole lot going on in them. Old desks, chairs, and projectors that barely work.
As Hell continues to thrive, it's sure that the hotel will reveal more of its secrets.
( Back to Lobby )
Basement There are stairs somewhere on the main floor that lead down into a basement that's often dark and creepy. It smells of dust and mold and some other… stink that may be best to not question too hard. Many lights have long since gone out and are yet to be replaced.
It houses Coal Tars that frequently follow around those who are sinful in nature. There's also an unused dungeon down there. Think the torture room but even grander. Plenty of shackles to string someone up with.
Most of the doors are boarded up and impossible to get into. However, there are some rooms available to explore. Generally speaking, they’re storage or janitorial. Sinners may be able to find some interesting things in the storage areas though. Random old games, radios, some potentially half decent clothing, and so on. Hidden among the disarray is a basement laboratory. While it was initially gifted to Leo Fitz and Tony Stark for their infrastructure work, many scientifically-minded sinners have worked on elaborate projects here. Always expanding and perpetually under construction, Tony and Fitz are generally happy to share their space with those who ask. Rules of conduct are standard, but with an inflexible agreement that new colleagues consent to be kind to Little Mack, the minion who acts as pet, mascot, and occasional lab assistant.
( Back to Lobby )
Dungeon The path to the dungeon is dingy, and increasingly unkempt. Insects skitter away from the light and motion you provide during the trip down into the bowels of the hotel. This isn't a place that is maintained well. It might not even have been designed for human habitation.
That changes at the end of the end of the path. The dungeon itself is an anachronistically modern unit, scrubbed clean and white as if it was just built yesterday. It looks comfortable in comparison. There are couches and a bed, one which might be softer than the one in your regular room. Is being sent here a punishment or a vacation?
But this is a space of isolation and imprisonment. You've been sent here to think about what you've done, to contemplate and feel remorse. And to help with that, you'll find that your powers don't work here. No smashing through walls or flying in circles. It's time to get in touch with what makes you tick on the inside.
With the sterility comes a lack of stimulation. The bright flourescent lighting never dims to give you a chance to sleep. The walls are padded too thickly to allow for any sound to break into the space. Even if someone came to visit at your window, there's no hope to hear them if they don't beg a demon guard for intercom access.
The restroom seems relatively private, all things considered. It's a tiled area at the back of your cell. Strange that there's a floor drain, and that the metal seems a little red around the edges. But that's probably nothing. Even if you find yourself needing to scream, no one will hear you.
( Back to Lobby )
Sub Basement The old-timers might gossip about the splendors of the sub-basement. It was a prison strong enough to seal away Lucifer once, they say. It became a shelter through what otherwise would have been The End times. Strange that the stairs don't seem to go down there anymore. Even those who have been there before will find that the entrance is nonexistant. There’s no door that leads to it. There’s no way to access it from the elevators. It probably seems like just a rumor to newer arrivals.
( Back to Lobby )
Outside The perimeter of Penance Hotel is fairly average. Not a whole lot to explore beyond the usual foliage, rock, and charred land. Walking around out back, though? Might give you something interesting to look at.
( Back to Lobby )
Stables Located out at the back side of the Hotel are the Stables. Here are where hellhounds and their pups and horses of all beastly variety are housed. Guests are able to take riding lessons for the horses or help tend to the pups and hounds if they desire (or they're forced).

Outside The perimeter of Penance Hotel is fairly average. Not a whole lot to explore beyond the usual foliage, rock, and charred land. Walking around out back, though? Might give you something interesting to look at.

Stables Located out at the back side of the Hotel are the Stables. Here are where hellhounds and their pups and horses of all beastly variety are housed. Guests are able to take riding lessons for the horses or help tend to the pups and hounds if they desire (or they're forced).
